How to Calculate Plant Spacing Volume

Most landscaping suppliers sell plant spacing by the cubic yard. To convert your project area to cubic yards, use this formula:

Volume (cu yd) = (Length × Width × Depth in feet) ÷ 27

Our calculator also multiplies your cubic yard result by 0 tons/yd³ (the standard density for plant spacing) to show estimated weight — essential if you are hauling the material yourself or need delivery pricing.

Pro Tips for Plant Spacing Projects

1

Staggered (triangular) spacing provides a fuller, more natural look and reduces soil erosion compared to square grid spacing.

2

Always leave a border gap equal to half the spacing distance from the edge of the bed so plants do not spill over path boundaries.

3

Mulch the empty spaces between young plants immediately to retain moisture and prevent weeds from occupying the open gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is staggered vs square plant spacing?
Square spacing aligns plants in straight rows and columns, creating grid patterns. Staggered (triangular) spacing offsets every second row, placing each plant in the pocket between the two in the adjacent row. Staggered spacing is ~15.4% more dense and provides better visual coverage.
How do you calculate number of plants needed?
For a square grid, divide the total area in square inches by the square of the plant spacing in inches. For staggered planting, divide the total area by the square of the spacing in inches multiplied by 0.866. Our calculator handles this conversion instantly for any shape.
How many plants do I need for a 10x10 area?
If spacing plants at 12 inches (1 foot) apart: on a square grid, you need 100 plants. On a staggered grid, you need approximately 115 plants to achieve full coverage. At 18 inches apart, you need 44 plants (square) or 51 plants (staggered).
Should I calculate edge spacing?
Yes. It is standard practice to subtract a border buffer (usually half the planting spacing) around the bed perimeter before running spacing calculations so plants don't grow over walkways or lawn edges.
